It is often said that when solid state drives were first introduced into enterprise storage arrays in 2008, that there was little use for them if there was no way to move or migrate less active data between different tiers of storage - SSDs to less expensive but still fast 15K RPM drives, 15K to 7.2K RPM drives - and to move data back again to SSDs when it became 'Hot" again.
